For over a decade, scientists at KALRO and the International Potato Center (CIP) have been working on a scientific breakthrough. They’ve developed potatoes embedded with three resistance genes (3R) — RB (Rpi-blb1), Rpi-blb2, and Rpi-vnt1.1 — sourced from wild potato relatives in South America.

In the misty highlands of Nyandarua, Nakuru, and Meru, potatoes are more than food. They are life, livelihood, and survival for thousands of Kenyan farmers. Yet, every rainy season, a silent enemy creeps through the fields, turning green leaves black, rotting tubers in the soil, and erasing months of backbreaking labor. That enemy has a name: late blight, a devastating disease caused by the water mold Phytophthora infestans.

The Disease: A Global Scourge

Late blight is not new. It caused the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s, killing over a million people and forcing mass migration. The culprit, Phytophthora infestans, thrives in cool, wet conditions. Spores spread quickly on the wind and in water, infecting leaves, stems, and tubers. In untreated fields, losses can reach 70% or more.

Globally, the story is the same. In India, late blight slashes yields across Uttar Pradesh and Bengal. In Peru; the potato’s ancestral home — farmers lose millions yearly. In Europe, it costs growers an estimated €1 billion annually in crop loss and fungicide expenses. The disease is ruthless, and no country growing potatoes has fully escaped its grip

According to a summary based FAOSTATon  data, in about 2018 Kenya produced 2,192,885 tonnes of potatoes, placing it right behind Malawi (4,535,955 t), South Africa (2,252,000 t), and ahead of several others—effectively ranking Kenya among the top six potato-producing countries in Africa. It's clearly one of the continent’s leading producers. But late blight wipes out nearly a quarter of this bounty every year, costing farmers an estimated KES 15.2 billion. Farmers pour millions more into fungicides, spraying up to 20 times per season, often in vain.

Kenya’s Weapon in Waiting: The Three R Genes

For over a decade, scientists at KALRO and the International Potato Center (CIP) have been working on a scientific breakthrough. They’ve developed potatoes embedded with three resistance genes (3R) — RB (Rpi-blb1), Rpi-blb2, and Rpi-vnt1.1 — sourced from wild potato relatives in South America.These genes act like sentinels: each one recognizes a different late blight attack signal and triggers the plant’s immune system to fight back. Alone, one gene may be overcome by the pathogen’s rapid evolution. Together, the “3R stack” offers near-complete resistance, proven in trials from Muguga to Njabini and Molo.

“These potatoes look and taste just like Shangi or Victoria,” says Dr. Moses Nyongesa, Director potato Research Center, KALRO

“The only difference is, they don’t die when blight hits with a successful rate between 80% to 100%.Farmers growing this variety will no longer need to spray fungicides against late blight,”


The crop, now awaiting approval from the National Biosafety Authority (NBA). Following Approvals, the next stage would be National Performance Trials in six potato-growing counties, paving way for release as early as 2026.

Counting the Cost of Delay

Yet despite successful trials, GMO potatoes remain locked behind regulatory processes and court debates over biotechnology in Kenya. That delay comes at a cost:

In the meantime, Kenyan farmers remain chained to costly sprays and unpredictable harvests, while countries like the U.S already plant biotech potatoes engineered for resistance, lower bruising, and longer storage. "If approved Kenya will join uganda and US in the production of gmo potatoes."said Dr. Paul Chege, a Senior Program Officer at ISAAA AfriCenter

A Tale of Two Farmers: Kenya vs. the Netherlands

In Nyandarua, currently the second largest potatoe producer in Kenya. Kenyan farmers spends approx KES 50,000 per acre on fungicides to shield their crop, often unsuccessfully. In contrast, Dutch farmers; supported by EU research and seed innovation -report far fewer sprays when using blight-resistant varieties bred through advanced biotechnology.While Dutch farmers channel savings into expanding production and boosting exports, Kenyan farmers remain locked in a cycle of debt and desperation, their fields blackened by blight.

The GMO potato is not just about genes and trials; it is about dignity and hope. For a farmer in Bomet, it could mean sending children to school instead of watching them skip meals after a failed harvest. For women in Meru, it could mean fewer hours spent handling toxic sprays. For Kenya, it could mean narrowing the national food deficit. Potatoes are Kenya's second most consumed staple food after maize, playing a crucial role in food security and the economy.Kenya could be saving KES 15 billion annual loss estimated from 23% loss due to Late Blight while also increasing its food basket closing the deficiency gap.

Kenya now stands at a crossroads. The science is ready, the need is urgent, and the farmers are desperate. What remains is political courage and regulatory clarity. Will Kenya release the GMO potato, or will farmers continue to lose billions each year to a preventable disease?For Kenya’s potato farmers, the answer cannot come soon enough.
