Murang’a County has become a beacon of digital transformation after 500 women and youth graduated from an intensive five-day Digital Skills Training Program aimed at unlocking new opportunities in business, employment, and innovation. The initiative, now in its third edition in Murang’a, was delivered through a powerful collaboration between Huawei Kenya, Computers for Schools Kenya (CFSK), the Joyful Women Organization, and MaMa Doing Good. With laptops open and determination in their eyes, participants embraced digital literacy not just as a skill: but as a life-changing opportunity. For many of the trainees, this was their first structured encounter with digital tools. In villages where farming and informal trade have long been the mainstay, the training introduced practical, market-ready competencies such as e-commerce, online marketing, freelancing, and safe use of digital platforms.

“Digital skills are the new currency of opportunity,” noted Ms. Joycelyn Mwikali, Director of Corporate Services at MaMa Doing Good.

“This training is not about technology alone—it’s about empowerment. It’s about giving women and youth the keys to self-reliance, innovation, and sustainable livelihoods.”Her words reflect the broader vision of the program: that digital empowerment is economic empowerment.

Beyond Training: A Shift in Mindset

At the graduation ceremony, the atmosphere was electric. Women who once doubted their place in a digital economy shared testimonies of confidence, resilience, and ambition. Youth, many of whom are unemployed or underemployed, spoke of newfound hope in online work opportunities:whether through freelancing platforms, digital entrepreneurship, or remote services.

“We are thrilled to partner with MaMa Doing Good to empower women with the digital skills they need to thrive in today’s connected world,” said Maureen Mwaniki, Director of Public Affairs at Huawei Kenya.

“Our goal is to ensure digital empowerment reaches women across the country—driving inclusion and bridging the digital divide. Through this program, we are creating pathways to a brighter, more inclusive future for all.”The training’s significance is underscored by stark statistics.

According to the World Bank’s 2023 Digital Inclusion Report, only 38% of rural youth in Kenya possess basic ICT skills, compared to 67% in urban areas. Yet by 2030, the World Bank projects that over 60% of jobs in Kenya will require advanced digital and cognitive skills. Without targeted interventions, rural communities risk being locked out of the future of work. This program is therefore more than training:it is a bridge to equity.

A Community Transformed In Murang’a, where many households rely on small businesses, farming, and casual work, digital skills training could be the spark for transformation. Women can now market farm produce online, youth can explore digital freelancing, and local businesses can scale through digital platforms. What makes the initiative unique is its community-first approach. By embedding training within the local context and making it accessible to women and youth in remote sub-counties, it ensures no one is left behind in Kenya’s digital revolution.

“This initiative goes beyond basic digital literacy—it’s about unlocking potential, expanding access to opportunity, and building stronger, more connected communities,” added Mwikali.

Looking Ahead

As participants return to their villages equipped with new skills, laptops, and renewed confidence, Murang’a County is positioning itself as a model for grassroots digital empowerment. The partnership between Huawei, CFSK, Joyful Women Organization, and MaMa Doing Good highlights how the private sector, civil society, and development organizations can work together to bridge Kenya’s digital divide. The 500 women and youth of Murang’a now stand at the forefront of Kenya’s digital future. Their journey is a reminder that with the right skills and support, digital inclusion can transform not just individuals, but entire communities.
